What
you need to know about spiders
Most spiders are harmless and can actually help control other pest insects
around your home. Whilst most spiders are venomous and a bite can cause
nausea, there are spiders that can be deadly or highly dangerous. In Sydney
these spiders include:
- Sydney Funnel-Web spider. A ground dweller, they’re mostly found
in moist soil areas along the coast.
- Red back spider. They’re found in dry areas under chairs and
patio furniture, pot plants, rubbish, letterboxes and subfloor areas.
- Whitetail spider. Found around cool, moist areas such as garden mulch.
Does stray into buildings in retreat from heat in summer.
Spiders, especially the black house spider, are common pests of homes, building
their webs around light fittings, doors, windows, exterior and interior surfaces.
For some they are not a bother but for others they are unsightly and scary.

Spiders can be hard to get rid of, especially in areas will dense garden foliage of bushland adjacent to the structure.
