What you need to know about wasps and bees?
Getting stung by a wasp or bee is not only painful but in some people can
cause allergic reactions and in some cases life threatening.
Wasps and Hornets
- Normally nest in Sydney urban areas under eves, in sheds or behind shutters
- Can attack in numbers if nest disturbed and have a potent sting
- A single nest can contain up to hundreds of wasps
Honey bees
Australia has over 1,500 species of native bees and about thirty species are
easily recognised in Sydney, and some don’t carry a sting. However the common
honey bee, introduced at first white settlement in Australia is the one we
most worry about in terms of being stung.
- Honey Bees defend their nest aggressively.
- Honey Bee stings are barbed and, when a person is stung, the sting (with
venom gland attached) will stick in the skin and tear away from the bee.
- If you are allergic to bee venom, a sting may cause difficulty in breathing
and even collapse.
